3 Dangerous Land Rover Brake Problems

Land Rover front image

While Land Rovers are known for their robust nature, they are not impervious to brake problems. In this blog post, British Auto Specialists will be looking at three common types of brake problems that can affect Land Rovers.

Problem 1: Brake Pad Wear

Your Land Rover brake pads are crucial in generating the friction that your vehicle requires to slow down. It is therefore important to be on the lookout for signs of brake pad wear and carry out regular maintenance to diminish the risks of accidents.

Signs of brake pad wear include the following:

  • Spongy brake pedal – With continuous usage, the brake pedal may start to feel spongy or softer than usual.

  • Odd noises – If you hear unusual noises such as squeaking or metallic sounds, chances are your brake pads are worn out.

  • Delayed brake response – Worn brake pads are also likely to respond slower when activated.

Causes of spongy pedals and brake pad wear include the following:

  • Damaged brake calipers

  • The presence of air in the brake lines

  • Faulty brake lines

  • The presence of moisture in the brake fluid

Problem 2: Parking Brake Failure

In the event of a parking brake failure, your Land Rover will struggle to stay stationary on slopes or when parked. It is therefore recommended that you get your parking brakes repaired as soon as possible.

Signs of parking brake failure include the following:

Lack of holding power – If your Land Rover cannot hold its position on an incline with the parking brake on, it’s usually a sign that your vehicle has insufficient holding power.

Odd noises – The occurrence of grinding or squeaking sounds when the parking brake of your Land Rover is engaged is another telltale sign of parking brake failure.

Difficulty in using the parking brake – Are you struggling to engage or release the parking brake of your Land Rover? This may be another sign of parking brake failure.

Causes of parking brake failure include the following:

  • Cable wear, fraying, or breakage

  • Faulty calipers

  • Brake shoe wear and tear

Problem 3: Leaking Brake Fluids

Brake fluid is essential to the smooth running of your Land Rover as it helps transmit pressure from the brake pedal to the callipers, which in turn pushes the brake pads against the rotors. It can therefore be highly dangerous to drive with leaking brake fluids.

Signs leaking brake fluids include the following:

Brake warning light – This light will activate in the event of low brake fluid levels.

Poor brake performance – Low brake fluid levels may also cause your brakes to feel spongy or slow to respond.

Puddles of fluid – The presence of fluid puddles under your Land Rover is a common indicator of a leak.

Causes of leaking brake fluids include the following:

  • Faulty brake lines

  • Damaged callipers, wheel cylinders, and master cylinder seals

  • Loose connections

  • Dislodged fittings

  • Overfilled brake fluid reservoir
